7.1. What is Non-Profit Storytelling and why is it so important? - By John Haydon

1. Important Announcements:

1.1. Rob's Report

So in a month's time I'm going to be off travelling Africa on the Out On A Limb charity expedition.

It was initiated by Bushy McKelvey, who is a Bilateral Amputee from below the knee, and is an expedition that will travel through 16 African countries whilst visiting and assisting numerous Non-Profits.

There will be three team members on motorbike whilst the rest will follow in two Ford sponsored 4x4's.

The expedition is going to be filmed for broadcast and all funds raised from it will go towards helping disabled people, starting with two Charities based in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

I'm going along as a spare cameraman, fundraising consultant, online corresponder, and because I'm the youngest, the general coffee maker!!!

It's going to be an incredible 3 month journey that will encompass over 26,000 km's! I'm extremely excited and honoured to be involved, and there will be much learnt and discovered along the way.

You can follow the Out On A Limb expedition on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/OutOnALimbSeries or on Twitter @OOALseries.

But please...

1.2. Expect Delays & Disruption To The Fundraiser Buzz!

Because of the depths of Africa that we will be travelling into I may not always have access to the internet and therefore may not always be able to send out The Fundraiser Buzz!. In fact, I'm not quite sure what to expect and have no idea how tied down I will be with other work.

So please do expect delays with this regular eZine. I assure you though that I will do my best to keep them rolling out on time and also to give you some news as to what's happening on the Expedition!

1.3. Learning Resources:

After reading the below Tips & Techniques section you'll want to tune into the Master Class Webinar on "6 Steps to Create a Powerhouse Nonprofit Social Strategy" tomorrow, Wednesday the 3rd May at 3PM Eastern Time.

You may want to lead up to the above webinar with this Free one from John Haydon on "10 ways to get better results for your Charity on Facebook". It's starts at 10AM Eastern time.

And don't miss next week's "Grant Basics: What you need to know to get started!"

On a video training basis I still strongly recommend that you get 100 Donors In 90 Days. It's worth far more than what it costs!

2. Idea in the Spotlight:

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is quickly becoming a popular fundraising method for Non-Profits and individuals.

But many groups think that it is the magical answer to all their fundraising woes, and somehow seem to believe that by simply putting a Fundraising Page up on a Crowdfunding platform will be enough to get funded.

The stark reality though is that it is not!

The most important part of a Crowdfunding fundraiser is actually the marketing and promoting of the campaign. If you don't drive supporters and potential funders to your page no one is going to find it or donate to you - Simple!

So once you have finished setting up an effective Donations Request page, you need to start proactively promoting that page and your fundraiser for the duration of the campaign.

So, there are two steps to a Crowdfunder...

  1. Setting up the Donation Request page. This can be done at Go Fund Me.

  2. And most importantly, The Promoting of your Fundraiser!

So if you want to do a Crowdfunding Fundraiser where you will take donations from supporters and others than you need to read both of the above Online Donations Fundraiser pages... Especially part 2, The Promoting your Fundraiser page!

3. Tips & Techniques:

Effective Fundraising Starts With Building A Following

Without a supporter base or a following you have no one to market your fundraisers to. You also have no one to draw volunteers from, and no one to help with spreading the word of your cause and fundraising efforts.

Having a following is one of the most important things you need to start developing for your fundraising campaigns!

So how do you grow a following?

There are many different ways, but here are a few online methods I'd recommend...

  1. Website or Blog with RSS feed - It should provide all the info about your organization and TELL YOUR CAUSE'S STORY! Make sure your website offers a RSS feed and that you also have an email submission / sign up box for your newsletter.

  2. Newsletters - Offer a newsletter once a week or once a month that describes all the great thing your organization does and informs on recent news.

  3. Facebook - Facebook is one of the best ways to interact and build a supporter base for your cause. Setup a page and start growing your following.

  4. Twitter - Becoming a Tweeter can be hard to get used to, but Twitter can be very effective in growing your supporter base.

  5. Youtube - Videos are one of the best ways of connecting with people and with the right direction you can grow a massive following with combining YouTube and the platforms above!

How to actually grow your followers through those methods is another story all together and expect advice on this through the coming Fundraiser Buzz! eZines.

So watch your email to catch the next Buzz newsletter.

The Trivia Event Fundraising Guide is a comprehensive 10 page guide to the notoriously fun fundraising event!

It covers the organizing, planning, fundraising and running of the event, and will help make your trivia fundraising evening a huge success.

With a Trivia Evening you can have loads of fun, whilst raising great funds and growing your supporter base. It's a fundraising event that I often recommend.

And the Guide is a FREE download for when you . Have fund with it!!!
